NYC Trainers' Top Toners

Memorial Day is a week from today. Last week I presented my tried and true Pre Beach Tips. The only exercise mention was to exit the elliptical or ratchet up your cardio. For today’s post. I contacted some friends of Foodtrainers for their advice. These exercise gurus are at the top of their field. We asked each of them for their #1 Pre-Beach move. Try doing each of these daily.

Brynn Jinnett is the owner of Refine Method in NYC. My clients rave about Brynn.  Brynn is a Harvard-educated, former NYC ballet dancer. Her clients have included Kelly Ripa, Ivanka Trump and Barbara Walters. She suggests:

Half-Kneeling Resistance Band Chop:
Attach a medium weight resistance band to a high sturdy object, such as a door or tree. Assume a half kneeling stance with your right foot forward and left shoulder in line with the band. Grab the band with two hands and tighten your abs and gluts. Keeping your hips still, chop the band diagonally down to your right hip and then slowly release back to your starting position. Your shoulders will follow the movement of the band, but your lower back and hips will remain stable. Perform 10-12 chops and then switch to the other side.

Gigi Barlowe-Marsh is a fantastic NYC based trainer. Gigi and her chef husband John Marsh are also the founders of my favorite chocolaty snacks The Real Bar.  Gigi selected:

Squat Push Press with Medicine Ball
This squat push press with a medicine ball works the gluts, quads, hams, shoulders, triceps, and can be cardiovascular if done with intensity. It is a well rounded, full body exercise that can be done with a 6 to 12 pound medicine ball depending on your strength and ability.
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a medicine ball (or other object if you don't one) in front of chest with elbows bent next to body. Squat down, keeping weight over heels and ball in front of chest.Stand up explosively, extending arms overhead; keep elbows close to ears. Do 10 to 12 reps

Genevieve Morritt’s clients adore her. She’s more than a trainer she’s a support system (with a killer sense of humor). Genevieve said "2 tiny muscle groups that can spruced up before you hit the beach are adductors and abductors. Jane Fonda is back."

Side-Lying Hip Abduction
Who doesn’t want a quick inner thigh spruce? This modified leg lift works the gluteus medius responsible for the lift at the top of the glut in a way that squats can’t. Do two sets until you feel the burn! Runners, this will provide your hip stabilizers with a fine-tuning to increase speed.
This is not Genevieve in the photo

Amie Hoff is a Fitness consultant who developed FitKit. Fit Kit is great for travel and Fit Kit Golf is the perfect father’s day present. Amie is launching FitKit50+ next month that focuses on balance, stability and coordination. An avid athlete Amie is about to do a century ride with Team and Training in California in honor of her sister (go Amie!).
Squat Jump with Clap
Stand in squat position with butt back, knees behind the toes. Jump up with explosive move and clap feet together. Bend legs as you jump for more challenge. This move is great because it works every muscle in your legs, even inner thigh. And the added bonus is it gets your heart rate up which makes it a great calorie torcher.
These are great exercises and exercise you can do away from home as well. If I had to choose pre beach exercise I would probably suggest the old reliable push up or plank pose though I liked something Brynn said, “You can't out-train a bad diet; mindful eating is the best training move out there. Another trainer friend calls it the Table Push-Away.”
What are your favorite exercises? Will you try these? How about the Table Push-Away?

Foodtrainers Goody Bag

On Friday I wrote about our first night at Blackberry Farm. The weekend got better and better from there. Friday, I met the boot camp group after they completed a 2-hour bike ride.  As everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch of grilled fish, asparagus, beets, cranberry beans, kale bolts (the word I forgot Friday) and green tea in mason jars I gave a quick talk about my favorite spring foods for training and answered sports nutrition questions. We then hiked 8 miles on the Appalachian Trail back to Blackberry. I met up with my family and heard about their morning of fly fishing (all good until Myles fell in the stream).

The next day was a major step outside our comfort zones as the boys, Marc and I spent the morning horseback riding and the afternoon shooting “clays”.  Our final dinner was in the wine cellar of the barn at Blackberry and included a Strawberry Gazpacho, Swiss Chard stuffed with herbed quinoa and Bison. My closing talk to the group focused on self-compassion.

In the guest rooms we left Foodtrainers’ goody bags (is it goody or goodie, sources seem split) with some of our favorite products.  Want to know what was in the bag?
Eboost a great pre-workout beverage option or as it turns out great pre-hike too.

Barney Butter- the creamiest almond butter around. Their 90-calorie snack packs are now used on Jet Blue flights. Be careful though, airlines may confiscate jars of nut butter (who knew?).

Herbal Water-I’ve written about Herbal Water before. They make both flat and sparkling water in fantastic flavors. The Blackberry boot camp trainees received lemongrass, mint vanilla water.

Food Should Taste Good- I read a great article on Food Should Taste Good founder in Rachael Ray magazine on my flight down to Tennessee. I wish all mini bars stocked these.
Real Bar*- those in boot camp used these for before the final hike of the trip. I love the ingredients and vegan version of this fudgy bar. Most of all, I love the taste. *Beware habit forming
Glow Cookies- these are the best gluten free cookies around.  We included Snickerdoodles in the goody bags. They were all the talk at yoga class the following morning.

Not bad for turndown snacks, huh?
I cannot thank Blackberry Farm enough for including me, next time I'm signing up for boot camp myself.
When’s the last time you stepped outside your comfort zone and tried a new activity? Have you ever done shooting clays (I quite liked it)? What is your favorite hotel snack or mini bar item?

Diamonds and Drinks

I was grumpy yesterday. I even emailed a friend and asked “ever plan an event and just want it over?” She put me at ease and said she often felt that way.  There were the usual moving pieces, people backing out at the last minute and other neglected work I needed to get to.  I think I had a sneaking feeling things weren’t going to turn out as I wanted them to. Why is it these are always the nights that end up perfect?

A few months ago, I was introduced to a jewelry designer named Marissa Alperin. Marissa came to my office, with her jewels, and though I’m not a serious jewelry person I was blown away by collections inspired by the beach, her love of color and texture and a piece she had made for her mother who had survived breast cancer. I fell in love with 2 creations of Marissa’s that I now wear almost every day and wanted to show others her work.

I'll digress to one of the last conversations I had with my dad. We had talked about the soldiers coming home from Iraq. I was in his hospital room, reading the paper and he spotted a photo and said “we can’t forget about these kids coming home without arms and legs, it’s not a life.” In my glass half full mindset and talking to someone who knew first hand what life was life without a limb I said “but they are alive and get to come home.” Up went his eyebrows and slowly he said “it’s a limited life.” Those words stuck with me and continue to give me chills as I type this.

I had the idea to invite friends to see Marissa’s creations and asked Marissa if she’d consider donating a percentage of her profits to Wounded Warrior Project. I also asked what she thought of the idea of having a charm made in honor of my dad. The charm would be a martini. You see, despite his “limited life", martinis persisted. Marissa loved the idea and we got to work planning “Diamonds and Drinks”.

Last night we gathered in my apartment. Marissa turned my dining room into a jewelry shop. My friend John Marsh was busy at work in the kitchen. John will be opening his first NYC restaurant in a few weeks, his wife told me “he is only here for you and for this cause.”  I had kept the guest list small as I didn’t know how things would go.  Steadily, friends arrived from all different parts of my life. While some shopped others sipped and John’s organic bites were passed around the room. We ate beets and feta atop Mary's Gone Crackers, crab avocado wasabi crisps and small demitasse cups of gazpacho.

Did I mention the elderflower martinis? Yes, these martinis are made with Absolut Boston which is elderflower and black tea flavored. The vodka is combined with lemon juice and simple syrup. After about 2 hours I was told we were out of the lemon juice (from 2 dozen lemons!) and the reserve bottled lemon juice.  The martinis and the evening was a hit.  The night was perfect.

What do you think is the key to a successful party? The guests? The food? The drinks?
